We have been following Kong Thai Lai from its previous shop location at Hutton Lane and Leith Street to the recent new location at Lebuh Dickens. You may read about our 2014 post here. The familiar facade of Kong Thai Lai coffee shop, the classic interiors and the warm, recognizable faces of the owners instantly bring back a flood of memories. We really appreciate the owners' effort preserving the coffee shop that way, as if everything is exactly the same but just different location.
For many Penangites, a traditional breakfast is simple is a cup of silky, smoky and buttery Nanyang coffee, accompanies by a set of toasted Roti Benggali that generously spread with butter and soft boiled eggs. One of our favourite ways to enjoy this set is by dipping the crisp toast in the soft boiled eggs, allowing the rich, creamy egg texture to coat every bite.
We have been practicing this since childhood, only later realising its resemblance to the British "Dippy Egg and Soldiers". Perhaps the similarity is a lingering influence from Penang's colonial past, subtly woven into the everyday food culture in George Town.
Another equally comforting way to enjoy the Benggali Toast is to have the soft-boiled eggs poured directly over the buttered toast. Slightly messy, delightfully crunchy, and indulgently rich, it is a humble and brilliant combination that continues to win hearts especially the young generations.
