Syed Bistro @ Bandar Sunway Tunas, Bayan Lepas, Penang

Looking for a different settings other than the typical Mamak stalls to enjoy supper? Then Syed Bistro at Bandar Sunway Tunas definitely worth the consideration.

When we first saw its name, we thought how could it be possible there is a bistro bearing the name Syed? The confusion ended when we finally embolden ourselves dining here, substantiated when we witnessed several times the never dispersing crowd from various races dining here.

It turned out Syed Bistro serves a variety of Indian Muslim and Western food. Its history can be traced till early 1900s and spanning across 4 generations. Apparently, Syed Bistro is synonym with Nasi Briyani, with a slight tweaking of the recipe. It is then named as "Nasi Bukhara".

Syed Bistro portray a very bold tagline on their signage - "The One and Only Bukhara Briyani". A range of bukhara briyani is offered, chicken, beef, mutton, lamb shanks, prawns (Saturday only), and Pakka fresh mutton (Friday only). We thought of giving it a try of their Pakka fresh mutton but were informed it was sold out at 2:30pm on a Friday.

Thus we settled for Chicken Bukhara (RM 14.00) instead. We were a little bit skeptical on ordering it as there was no price at all on the menu, raising our fear we would be tricked to pay for an exorbitant price. Luckily, the price turned out to be average, not too skewed to a lower side nor not too unreasonably priced.

The Chicken Bukhara comes in a very large portion of rice, with a chicken thigh hidden beneath the bed of the rice, a boiled egg, some pickles with reddish sauces and a separate curry. We enjoyed the aromatic and fluffy rice much, perhaps first grade basmati rice was being used together with some good grades of spices. Match it with the reddish pickle sauce or the curry sauce to yield an elusive sensation.

We are not too sure what contributed to the unique fiery sense of the bukhara briyani but some readings over the internet mentioned bukhara means addition of prunes. Overall dish was superb but the chicken thigh was too hard for our likings.

Then we saw the a few skewers of tandoori chicken being displayed at the stall, and the servers were busy preparing the tandoori from the big oven. Tempted by it, we had a set of Cheese Naan (RM 4.80) and Tandoori Chicken (RM 7.50). While the leavened flat bread had desirable texture, we thought the cheesiness could be amplified for a more delectable mouth feel. On the other hand, tandoori chicken was soft, tender and well marinated with spices. Squeeze some droplets of lime for some tangy sensation, and further enhanced its taste with the greeny chutney sauce.

Maggi Goreng Mamak (RM 4.80) would be something to go for if you are opting for an economical yet stomach fulfilling dish. At the price tag of RM 4.80, it is indeed a good bargain. We believe more than 1 packet of noodle was used for frying this plate of noodle, resulting an unusual large quantity of noodles compared to other places relatively. Taste was above average, and it was purely noodles with eggs and vegetables only.

For a more conventional option, go for Nasi Goreng Pataya (RM 7.00). Enclosed within the aromatic egg were decently fried rice.

If you are totally undecided over what to eat over the menu, simply cling over to the main counter and pick some dishes for a plate of delectable nasi kandar.
