Misai Mee Jawa: A Longtime Favourite for Mee Jawa in Raja Uda Butterworth Penang

If you are a fan of old-school Penang hawker food, Misai Mee Jawa is one interesting spot that worth adding to your Butterworth food list.

Tucked along the bustling Jalan Raja Uda, Misai Mee Jawa is a humble hawker stall under the zinc-roofed hawker center. serving its signature Mee Jawa for more than two decades. It has been inherited by the second generation now and they has also been recognized by the MICHELIN Guide in year 2023. However, what makes them interesting was not because the MICHELIN red round sticker but the unique Mee Jawa taste that only can be found here.

Mee Jawa + Crackers (RM 7)

The star here is course the Mee Jawa that available in both the original soupy version and fried Mee Jawa. I opted for the classic soup version that it comes with yellow noodles and thick, rich gravy with sweet, tangy flavour. I love the chilli that adds a little kick without overpowering the noodles.

The bowl comes generously topped with ingredients including tofu, egg, peanuts and crispy crackers that I asked for add on. The crackers is so huge that basically covered my noodles. Gave the calamasi a little squeeze to brings everything together, it adds refreshing citrusy zing that cuts through the richness of the gravy. Then, crumble the crispy crackers into the Mee Jawa so they soak up the delicious gravy while still retaining some crunch. I love the contrast in textures, soft noodles and paired with the crunchy crackers.

For those who prefer something less soupy, the fried Mee Jawa is another option, probably giving the noodles a more savoury and wok-fried character.

What makes Misai Mee Jawa appealing is its simple and no frills setting. The spirit of keeping the recipes, remains the food as the main attraction, serving the neighborhood and regulars the comforting flavours. Located along one of Butterworth's busy food streets, it would make a nice stop when you in the vicinity.

Misai Mee Jawa is definitely one for Mee Jawa lovers to try when you are on the mainland.
