A trip to China often leaves a lasting impression, especially when it comes to its rich and comforting cuisine. If you’re craving authentic Chinese flavours reminiscent of those travels, Mai Xiang might just hit the spot. This humble little eatery tucked away along Lorong Carnavon immediately caught my attention with its sign proudly showcasing handmade dumplings.
Mai Xiang offers a range of in-house specialities, including Hangzhou Xiao Long Bao, soup buns, and fried dumplings. There’s also a good selection of mains, with noodle dishes priced from as low as RM9.90. As everything is freshly prepared upon order, a little patience is needed but it’s well worth the wait.

Tempted by many of their signature items, I eventually settled on the Fried Egg Xiao Long Bao. The buns were well-balanced in flavour, with skin that was neither too thick nor too thin. Slightly salty on the outside and paired with a fried egg, it made for a satisfying snack that is perfect for sharing.
For something more substantial, you can customise your Chongqing Hot & Sour Noodles. I chose the original noodles over handmade noodles, Jiangxi thick vermicelli, or even Maggi. The dish delivered a pleasant balance of spiciness and tanginess, complemented by peanuts, a touch of minced pork, and a topping of egg. At just RM10.90, it’s a comforting and value-for-money bowl.
I also took away the Shanghai Scallion Oil Noodles, which came topped with egg and coated in a fragrant mix of scallion oil and soy sauce, but it is slightly on the salty side. The accompanying wanton soup featured generously filled dumplings, making it a great pairing with the noodles.
