One Good Bowl 一碗 at Chulia Street Georgetown Penang

If you are looking for a hide-out from the bustle town for a truly satisfying bowl of meal, One Good Bowl cafe at Chulia Street certainly lives up to its name. They offers a bowl of balanced, clean, healthy and delicious meal that leave a lasting impression.

Stepping into the cafe, the serene, leafy-green insterior gently pulls me out of the city's tempo, made me slow down, soaked in the greenery,, and appreciate the thoughfully curated bowl of food. The menu was designed with a playful fusion of Western and Indonessian influences, yet its made into the cafe's unique creation.

I was amazed by by the stone-style bowls they used to serve the meals. It made me chuckle on the thought that I was having "Stone Age Dining" but in the fun and modern twist. It was like the raw simplicity of stone combined with contemporary, flavour-rich food.

I ordered two of their special creations which are Chilli Chilli Bowl and Edamame Oasis. The Chilli Chilli Bowl was a hearty combination of Basmati lime rice, oppor chicken, sayur urap (Indonesian vegetable salad), salted egg, tempe, emping (Indonesian cracker), green sambal and red sambal. I love how the nutrients and flavours were balanced, a little spice, a bit of tang with a wholesome feel. The Indonesian inspiration is clear but it feels fresh and modern.

Edamame Oasis was interesting and clean while still rich in flavour. It came with mashed edamame rice, grilled chicken slice, avocado, boiled egg, Mexican beans, green lettuce, blueberries, roasted cashew nuts and cherry tomato. The grilled chicken slice as it was well seasoned and tender, while the mashed edamame rice delivered a satisfying nutty texture that enhanced by the roasted cashews nut If you are after a 'clean' meal that does not compromise on flavour, this is a must-order.

To round off our meal, we had the Peanut Butter Bingsu, its nutty, silky shaved ice with jelly underneath. A perfect sweet finish to balance out the meal.

On second visit

We returned to One Good Bowl and this round we had the Cauli Culture, a vegetarian dish. After our wonderful experience with their Edamame Oasis dish thus we had high expectations on Cauli Culture will it did not disappoint. The cauliflower rice was soft yet retained a pleasant bite, complemented by a colourful mix of sautéed mushroom, tofu, spinach, Mexican beans, edamame, long beans, cherry tomato and topped with roasted cashew nuts. Truly, all the goodness packed in one wholesome bowl.

Next, we had the Bowl of Batik. which piqued our curiousity with its spinach noodles with chicken broth. A light yet comforting bowl that didn't compromise on taste. It came with soya stewed chicken, long bean, beansprout, boiled egg, pangsit, mustard green, and a side of  Indonesian red sambal for an extra punch of heat.

Gado-gado is one of our favourite Indonesian dish so we had to order their Gado Botanica. This traditional salad stood out for its sweet and spicy peanut sauce, paired with spinach, beansprout, tempe, long beans, cucumber, emping and red rice ketupat.
