As simple as a bowl of vermicelli soup may sound, takes skill to get the flavours just right. Tucked along McNair Road, just a few shops away from Cecil Street Market, this humble eatery has been serving comforting bowls of noodles since 2008. Having shifted locations twice, it is now in front of a Penang heritage house.
The setup is modest, just a few charcoal stoves at the entrance, each pot bubbling away as orders are cooked fresh. The menu is simple and straightforward, offering your choice of protein (pork, fish, or a mix of both) and base (vermicelli, maggi noodles or porridge).
We tried the minced pork and pork ball maggi noodle soup, and it was satisfying in every bite. The minced pork was flavourful, the pork balls chewy, and the broth carried the richness from hours of careful simmering. The stock was well balanced. Chili and soy sauce are provided at the table, perfect for add on at your own preference.
Next came the fish and minced pork porridge, a hearty bowl that is pure indulgence of old school flavours. The rice was cooked in broth, absorbing all the depth of flavours, while the minced pork and fresh fish added it more flavourful. The drizzle of fragrant garlic oil further enhancing the flavours.
A simple yet soulful meal, this is the kind of place we would love returning to again and again.
