Penang has never been short of good egg tarts, but it's always refreshing to see more options popping up. The latest addition at Queensbay Mall is Rich Baker, marking their very first outlet in Penang. If the name sounds familiar, that is because Rich Baker is the rebirth of Paparich but now no papa, just rich! Alongside their range of Malaysian classic dishes are their freshly baked egg tarts, making it a great stop whether for a quick tea break or a proper meal.
We passed by their shop before the mall closed and couldn't resist grabbing a box of egg tarts home. They offers five flavours of their signature tarts-Original, Cheese, Pandan, Yam, and Musang King Durian. With their buy 6 free 1 promotion (note: the free tart only applies to the Original), it was a perfect excuse to sample a few of the flavours.
The egg tart itself is thick with a soft and custardy filling. The crust wasn't as flaky, mostly likely due to takeaway but still enjoyable. The Yam tart would probably a hit for taro lovers, topped with pretty rose-shaped yam paste and paired with the silky custard base. The Cheese tart, however, felt a little ordinary compared to the others. It feels like the cheese overshadow the custard's aroma, yet it wasn't rich or cheesy enough to stand out on its own. Anyway, the variety of flavours add a fun twist to the classic egg tart, giving Penangites to indulge in this timeless treat in many ways.
