For over a decade, Lao Fu Zi Bak Kut Teh has been dedicated to serving hearty bowls of the beloved "meat bone tea" to its loyal patrons. There are no fancy décor, no air-conditioning, just a simple roadside stall setup that carries an old-school vibes that deeply loved by the locals.
Many diners are tempted to compare Penang's bak kut teh to the famed klang version, but it is best to come without such expectations. Here, Lao Fu Zi serves only the soup-based bak kut teh, with flexible choices of pork cuts and parks, complemented by add-ons like fried youtiao.
Our steaming orders arrived swiftly after we settled in. The aroma of herbs filled the air, stirring fond memories of simpler days. We opted for lean meat, pork ball which came alongside button mushrooms, beancurd and wolfberries. The broth leaned toward the richer, darker style. It is soy sauce based, savory, slightly on the salty side but not overly herbal. Paired with a bowl of rice, accompanied with dark soy sauce, chili and garlic was so satisfying. Of course, dipping youtiao into the broth is a much, though we wishes theirs not that crispy.
Anyway, it is exactly these comforting flavors that warm the soul, the flavors we hope to keep ejoying and share with our kids.
