Nasi Lemak Sambal Lesung at Bayan Baru Penang

Nasi Lemak has long been a staple of the Malaysian breakfast table, but in recent years it has evolved into a hearty, protein-packed meal that is perfect for lunch and dinner too. This growing love for nasi lemak has led to a surge of specialized nasi lemak outlets across the country.

The recent new spot in Penang is Nasi Lemak Sambal Lesung, which has transformed from a humble roadside into a restaurant located in the bustling area of Bayan Baru, just a stone throw away from the TNB office, the shop lots near Sunshine Square Bayan Baru. The owner has modernized her mother's traditional recipes while keeping the soul of the dish alive.

The name "lesung' refers to the Malay term for mortar and pestle, an essential tool in traditional sambal making. Intrigued by their promise of authentic flavours from their website, we were eager to try their Malayzing Nasi Lemak.

We opted for the basic Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah from their menu. The portion was just right, featuring fragrant basmati rice, with the essential components of a classic nasi lemak like crispy anchoviews, peanuts and a whole poached egg. The highlight was the L-shaped spiced chicken drumstick, well marinated with spices with hints of lemongrass and shredded coconut came through in every bite. Unfortunately, the chicken was slightly dry which likely due to it being takeaway.

Nasi lemak is incomplete without sambal. There are two options of sambal which are sweet and spicy but we opted for mixed sambal. The sambal we had was decent, it was not spicy enough for us and lacking of the punch that would make us crave sponful after spoonful. It did not quite deliver the wow factor we were hoping for. Perhaps we should try the spicy sambal instead next time.

For those wanting to indulge, the menu also features premium options like the Nasi Lemak Lobster Rempah, a luxurious version on this humble Malaysian dish.
