Sarawak Kolo Mee and Laksa 妈妈特制砂拉越美食 at Big Crab Street Food
We have frequent these two stalls selling 3 colours kolo mee and only found out later they share similar name which is called 妈妈特制砂拉越美食 . The two locations are the Golden Pheonix Food Court at Sungai Dua and Big Crab Street Food at Fortune Park. It was the comforting taste that reminded me of the university times at Kuching.
While we are not sure if there are any connection to MM Sarawak Kolo Mee Shop at Weld Quay (which unfortunately we have not had the luck to try despite a few attempt) We have to say this stall is among the closest-to-authentic Sarawak flavours we have found so far in Penang.
Their Sarawak Laksa with 3 large prawns is undoubtedly the showstopper on the menu, worth to try but for us the real gem was the Kolo Mee.
3 Colours Kolo Mee RM 9
Kolo Mee RM 8, add on wanton for extra RM 2
If you are new to kolo mee, the 3 colours kolo mee is a great introduction. It lets you try all three varieties in one plate. The original, soy sauce and char siew oil version only you decide which is your favourite. Our personal favourite has always been the Char Siew Oil version back in Kuching. We understand it is hard to replicate the exact taste here but still it was a satisfying attempt. For a more balanced meal, we added extra wantons to try but it turns out they were just average.
Laksa RM 16
Here goes the Sarawak Laksa where this one is the luxurious version with three sizable fresh prawns. However, if you are looking for the deeply rich, complex and creamy broth typical of Kuching's version, this might fall slightly short. The flavour was milder than expected, probably adjusted to suit the local palate. We loved the generous serving of lime, we got 3 full limes that brings the essential tangy that Sarawak Laksa must have. We like the flexibility here to customize how much tangy you love your laksa to be. Traditional toppings like shredded chicken, omelette strips and bean sprouts were all present, adding both texture and mouthfeel to the smooth vermicelli rice noodles.
