With the annual Dumpling Festival festival fast approaching, we came to Hui Shang Ying for a quick lunch and get some of their signature chilled dumpling. Established in 2017, the regulars from the Sungai Dua neighbourhood probably very familiar with them, its located just short walking distance from Universiti Sains Malaysia.
They used to have Nyonya Rice Dumpling but our recent visit to find only Hokkien Rice Dumpling in menu. Here is where you can get Bak Zhang aka Rice Dumpling all year long. We are happy as these dumplings pack with flavourful punch.
The eatery spans two lots and features a warm and welcoming interior with greenery and adorable bear-themed décor. Tables are well spaced, creating a comfortable sdining atmostphere. The two-page menu is packed with options, either for those craving for something spicy or simply a bowl of comforting noodles or rice dishes. They too offered self picked ingredients corner if you love the flaxibility and fun of selecting ingredients.

Single Set Self Selected Ingredients, Tomyum Soup base |
Wholesome of noodle and vegies choices, chilled proteins and toppings to choose from. We are delighted to be able to choose our soup base from Mala Soup/Dry, Mala Silky Smooth Milk Soup, Tomyum Soup or the Four Treasures Herbal Soup Base.
We went for the Tom Yum soup with spinach noodles, and it was served piping hot shortly. The broth was rich, not overly fiery or sound, its something most palates will find enjoyable.

One of the staple menu is their Whole Egg Mee, which is not the usual wantan mee. It's milder in flavor and come with your choice of proteins, Char Siew, Roasted Pork or Dumpling, or as we chose pulled chicken. It came with two wantons dumpling and you can always add more protein if desired.

Hokkien Rice Dumpling RM 14.90 |
But teh real highlight and also the reason of our vist was the Hokkien rice dumplings. Each dumpling is generously sized and stuffed to the brim with flavourful ingredients: big chunks of braisedpork belly, a salted egg yolk, chestnut, dried shiitake mushroom, beans and glutinous rice. We love that is it tied the traditional way which using bamboo string. It was hearty, satisfying and full of flavour. Just the kind of dumpling that reminded me of dumplings made by grandma.
