It was a spontaneous evening during Chinese New Year early this year, when we decided to find a pet café to relax. Mainly to let the kids get up close with some furry feline friends. As we passed by Burma Road, Izawa Dessert Cafe caught our attention. It occupies a sizeable lot within the Heng Guan Building.
Upon entering, guests are required to wear socks for hygienne purposes. No worries if you forget, as socks are available for purchase at the counter. The café is thoughfully divided into two sections where a dedicated dining area with no cats for those who prefer to eat without disturbance, and a cat zone, where you can dine while the cats roam freely, often eyeing your food with curiousity. The cave-like seating area seems to be a popular choice among guests. Its great for both comfort and Instagram photos.
Izawa's menu revolved towards Japanese-style mains and big selections od dessert, like the snowflake ice desserts that perfect for sharing. However, do note that there is a minimum order policy which each guest must order at least a drink, dessert or a main dish. Prices are slightly on the higher side, but its understandable when considering part of the cost goest toward the care of the cats.
There is a good mix of cats lounging around the café, but the feline nature, many were more interested in napping or playing with other cats there. Some may be a little aloof, interactions should be kept gentle and respectful, especially with the attentive staff ensuring the cats' comfort. Frankly, we did not had much fun there but treated it more like an experience for the kids, allowing them to observe and gently interact with the cats in a relaxed setting.
