Italian renowned bartender, brand ambassador and spirits consultant Mattia Coppo was in Farquhar's Bar in Eastern & Oriental Hotel Penang on 16 June 2023 to conduct a cocktail workshop, showcasing the technqiue and tricks of mixing two Italian aperitivos - Negroni and Spritz.
In the 2 hours session by Mattia, we get to taste 2 classic Italian aperitivos conconcted using the recipe by Mattia, along with some finger food served by the hotel. A group of cocktail enthusiasts also joined the session and have an interactive session with Mattia.
The session started with a brief introduction by Mattia himself. He was a PhD holder in poetry, but in between his studies he decided to amass knowledge on cocktails and soon become a professional in the cocktail industry.
We started the evening with a classic Italian Negroni, using London Dry Gin, Gajardo Bitter Radicale and Cocchi Storico di Torinio. Mattia explained that Gajardo Bitter Radiacle has a local herb flavour, offering a mixture of bitter and balsamic taste, then balanced by the sweet vermouth - Cocchi Storico di Torino.
Another classic drink made by Mattia is Spritz, a mild cocktail that suitable to drink before meals. It is made of 35ml Gajardo Triple Sec, 100ml Vignalta and 100ml Soda.
