We have been frequenting Sungai Petani town in Kedah for many times for both business and leisure purposes but little we know that this Southern Kedah town offers one of the best Tau Sar Piah in Malaysia.
The Tau Sar Piah is being sold at Lau Zi Ho (老字号大饼家), a traditional and no-frills confectionery along Jalan Kuala Ketil. This shop always has people forming a beeline, all waiting to purchase the freshly bake Tau Sar Piah. Interestingly, the shop only limit each individual to purchase a maximum of 4 cans (24) of Tau Sar Piah but this did little to deter people coming back from these delicious cookies.
You may wonder what makes these seemingly simple cookies so delicious?
Well, it is a combination of several factors. Firstly, all the Tau Sar Piah from Lau Zi Ho are freshly baked and pass to customers' hand after the oven. Therefore it renders a crisp outer layer, so be sure to enjoy these Tau Sar Piah after you bought them and try not to keep it for too long.
Second, the fillings are dense with nice mung bean flavours with a hint of saltiness, which rightly balance the sweetness.
Though Penang is renowned for producing one of the best Tambun Piah (smaller version of Tau Sar Piah) and have been eating a variety of famous Tambun Piah brand, I still get hooked by the Tau Sar Piah by Lau Zi Ho. Personally, I felt it harder to execute a delicious Tau Sar Piah than Tambun Piah due to its size and fillings.
As much as I hate to wait in the queue to get the Tau Sar Piah from Lau Zi Ho, I still persistenly back there to purchase Tau Sar Piah there. Apart from Tau Sar Piah, they also sell a variety of cookies and confectionery, though it may not be their homemade brand. You can grab other cookies from the shelf and pay together at the counter later.
We once posted the video of Lau Zi Ho on Xiao Hong Shu and one of the presumbly owner came and addressed our concern regarding the long wait. According to him, all the Tau Sar Piah are handmade without involvement of any machines. Therefore, they only can manage to bake about 20 cans (24 pieces) within the time frame of 45 minutes.
In case you prefer to purchase in smaller quantity, you can purchase a box of 12 pieces or a bag of 10 pieces Tau Sar Piah.
Anyway, good food deserved the waiting right?
