I always enjoy having a bowl of piping hot and spicy curry noodles. During our recent trip in Kuantan, my friend there told me there are 2 famous curry noodles in the east coast town - Hoi Yin and Teng Haw. Hoi Yin (海燕茶室) is better known to tourists due to its strategic location at Teluk Cempedak. Therefore, we decided to make a pit stop at Hoi Yin before heading back to our hometown.
Before arriving at Hoi Yin, I thought this place would be decked with tourists and has a modern design. It only turns out partially true. The restaurant, or should I say kopitiam is at the archaic design, maintaining the old traditional coffee shop settings. The shop was relatively crowded but I can see more locals than tourists, as there were modestly dressed youngsters, senior citizens and Malay too!
Apparently, Hoi Yin is halal certified and hence it was no surprise to see Muslim patronizing here.
We sat down and an aunty came to take our order. We had a bowl of curry noodles and another bowl of clear soup noodles, simply to cater for the young toddler.
How was ourverdict of the curry noodles?
Having come from north of Malaysia, we were accustomized to the fiery hot curry noodles that enriched with santan. In contrast, the curry noodles in Hoi Yin is creamy curry soup type, similar with the type of curry gravy we usually have with curry chicken albeit with a more watery texture. It is served with chicken, fishballs, tau pok and yellow noodles. It was not that spicy as we thought but there is option to add chilli sambal from the jar in every table. Usually I did not enjoy yellow noodles but the yellow noodles here is al-dente and goes really well with the curry soup.
The taste is good but still we prefer the conventional rich curry noodles from Northern Malaysian. Old habit is hard to change.
Meanwhile, the clear soup is nice, very soothing and has a sleek flavour.
