Koon Kee 冠记 Famous Wanton Mee @ Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur

We always have a preference on Klang Valley Wantan Mee over Penang version. The noodles' elasticity and the sauce concoction in Klang Valley's version suited our appetite better. During our recent trip to Kuala Lumpur, we googled for some Wantan Mee big names and found Koon Kee (冠记), which is located in the touristy Petaling Street. 

As much as we respect the old-school Koon Kee Wantan Mee that has existed for at least half a century, we did not enjoy the wantan mee here. 

Koon Kee still operates in a traditional shop that host a few dining tables only. It is easy to miss the shop if you are first timer to Petaling street, as there are street vendors operating outside the shop. For geomarking purpose, you can look an elder couple selling Chinese pancakes in front of Koon Kee (the Chinese pancakes were surprisingly good). When we came around 10am , we were lucky to found an empty table. Order was taken swifly by the a young lady manning the shop. 

The noodles were served to us within a short while. Aeshetic wise the noodles were textbook - dark and nice. On top of that, we liked the consistency of the noodles which were al-dente but the taste was average. The soy sauce concotion did not particularly impressive and aromatic, and the whole plate was too dry to enjoy. 

Fortunately the char siew was alright but the wantan was overseasoned with pepper that made it appetizing. 

Overall, it was not the wantan mee that we had expected from its fame. Perhaps we came here with too high expectations, or Koon Kee has way past it prime?
