The Fat Frog Cafe @ Padang Matsirat, Langkawi

If you are looking for a restaurant in Langkawi that offers a relaxing environment and away from all the overhyped tourist restaurants, then The Fat Frog is worth checking out. The Fat Frog is located at a remote location between Kuah and Pantai Cenang (near to Hospital Langkawi), overseeing a golf course and offers an unparalled views to any other restaurants in the town. The restaurant has a small menu, mainly focuses on Western inspired dishes and some cocktails.

When we first arrived at the restaurant, we thought we went to the wrong place. It was a brick house, a wandering Golden Retriever, a lush green and nothing resembles a restaurant. Then we walked a dozens steps into the house and only have a relief we were in a right place. The Fat Frog has nothing resembles any other restaurants you find in Langkawi. It appears more to a place for those golfers to unwind themselves after a game or two to a certain extent.

The Fat Frog has a Western inspired small menu and expect a relatively premium price compared to other restaurants in Langkawi. However, rest assured you will be compensated with quality food along with relaxed atmosphere and warm crews.

For main dishes, we had a Risotto (RM 40) and Shepherd Pie (RM 35), which is later is an off menu item written on the board. The Risotto is finely executed, as the Arborio rice cooked to a nice creamy consistency then topped with some mushrooms. Personally, I would prefer Portebello mushrooms over Shimeji mushrooms used in the risotto here, as Portebello introduced a more earthy flavour to the risotto.

The Shepherd Pie here is more to a lighter version of it as there is no presence of meat compared to the conventional Shepherd Pie, and the pie has more porportion of mashed potatoes. It is served along with a generous quantity of sauteed vegetables. It was not exactly the Shepherd Pie we usually had but the taste is alright.

The Fat Frog took additional effort by having a few selections for kids, namely Fried Rice, Pizza and Spaghetti Pomodoro for the them at the price tag of RM 20. We ordered the Spaghetti Pomodoro for our little ones and she seems alright with the food despite it was reddish in colour which could easily perceived as spicy. The taste is fine and the noodles are al-dente, but the lacks of proteins in a dish was a big miss in the dish.

We also ordered a Lava Cake (RM 18) which was written on board and it was not really impressive. The chocolate was alright but the cake was sloppy in preparation - feels doughy.

Overall, it was an enjoyable lunch at a relaxed environment. Despite the higher price tag of the food here, such a serenity scenes in Langkawi for lunch or dinner is rare and you can feel that here is not a tourist trap, but more to a place to sit down and have a good time.
