Hainanese Delight @ Lebuh King, Georgetown, Penang

People often say you may pass by a restaurant that serves good food in Penang without knowing it. This case did happen to us recently when we were wandering by foot in Georgetown while still hesitating what to have for dinner, we saw this Hainanese Delights in Lebuh King and decided to dine in here. Hainanese Delights appeared to be an old school Hainanese restaurant without much pretentious settings, and the food here is pretty decent, authentic and comforting though it may a bit pricey.

Among the Hainanese specialities we tried out at Hainanese Delight including Chicken Chop (RM 18.50), Chicken Pie (RM 18.00) and Hailam Mee (RM 14), while other Hainanese specialties that go well with rice such as Jiu Hu Char, Inchee Kay Bin, Chicken Curry Kapitan, Foo Yong Crab also available.

Personally, we liked the Hainanese chicken chop here. Its meat was tender juicy with a slight crisp skin, and the sauce was mildy sweet with a slight sourness sensation arised from the Worchestershire sauce, rendering the dish very appetizing. Nowadays it is not easy to find a nicely executed Hainanese Chicken Chop so we were happy to get it here.

The Hailam Mee was nicely executed too. Its noodles are cooked to al-dente, and the starchy sauce was infusing a mild sweetness to the overall flavour. It was served along with some prawns and pork slices, and pair the noodles with the chillies provided for an even better overall taste.

Chicken Pie is one dish that will take long time to prepare here. Well, this is a dish that hard to justify because the overall taste is decent with mushy and juicy filling topped with a crispy puff, but the portion was tiny and insufficient to enjoy. The fillings were in small quantity and could be finished within a few scoops.

Lor Bak (RM 7.80) here may be expensive and sloopy in presentation but the taste was good. Moreover, it is noted that the lor bak was handmade and the portion size is relatively bigger than those you could get outside. The fillings were intact and nicely marinated with 5 spices powder, unlike those regular lor bak that you get elsewhere with hardened fillings.

Overall, we think Hainanese Delight is a great place to enjoy good and authentic Hainanese food despite its slightly premium price tags. The experience and flavour were were compensated with the price we paid.
