Wei Fang Bao Zi 味坊包子 @ Jalan Mount Erskine, Penang

Wei Fang Bao Zi 味坊包子 is a Chinese eatery in Jalan Mount Erskine that offers authentic China staples such as dumpling and noodles. The entire restaurant offers a simple dining atmosphere akin the eatery outlets by the roadside in China. Hence, Wei Fang Bao Zi is more like a casual dining restaurant or aka kopitiam with self service and the waiting time could be long at times . The food on the other hand is relatively affordable with a budget of RM 15 per pax would be enough to get a satisfying meal. We did find the taste here different than the usual food we had in Malaysia but it was indeed intriguing. After all, taste is always a debatable topic and very subjective.

Fried Dumpling

The restaurant offers 5 different dumplings, namely pork, cabbage pork, celery pork, leek pork and fried dumplings with each piece cost RM 1.10 (except of fried dumplings) and a minimum order of 5 pieces. They also offer Xiao Long Bao at RM 1.60 each with a minimum of 4 pieces per order.

Personally, the fried dumpling is very appealing in taste with an unique flavour filling and dcently charred. It is best eaten along with self help made condiments consist of ginger slices and vinegar. The Xiao Long Bao filling is slightly different from the usual ones we had, with a subtle taste that possibly consists of herbs. Its skin can tell you these xiao long bao are handmade.

Hangzhou Meat Buns (RM 1.70/piece)

You can skip the pancakes as it was basically tasteless, even though it claims to be scallion pancakes. On the other hand, Hangzhou meat buns are decent choice to complement the smaller portion of noodle if you are someone having a big appetite.

BBQ Pork (RM 2.20/skewer) and BBQ Sausage (RM3.50/skewer)

We like the Nanjing Scallion Noodle much. Its seasoning are on point and offers a light yet flavorful taste. Add some soy sauce or vineger to give the noodles a different taste dimension.

Wei Fang Bao Zi also offers a variety of skewers, such as pork, lamb, gizzard, chicken wings, fishball and sausages. The skewers are nicely grilled and then sprinkled with a decent amount of chilli pepper to give it some hot elements.

The drinks choices here are pretty boring with options such as soft drinks and beers. The only one stood out is Mongolian Milk Tea (RM 3.00) which is available in either sweet or sour. Try it at your own discretion.

The compound of the shop can host probably up to 8 cars. In case the parking spot run out (which is usually the case), you may want to consider park your car at the space opposite the restaurant and use the traffic light for crossover.
