ICHI TONG 一桐 @ Lorong Prangin, Penang

Tucked in an alley in Georgetown Penang, Ichi Tong 一桐 is a cafe that serves a combination of classic Chinese cuisine and modern folk cooking stylish food. The signature dish here is none other than the all-time-favourite Tok Tok Mee, or better known as Wantan noodles. Not only the food here is impressive in taste but the cafe also makes a perfect spot to take Instagram pictures with a variety of green plants and modern cafe vibes. The price here may be above average relatively to the similar dish in the market but you get compensated with the superior and quality food.

Kochabi Tok Tok Noodle (RM 13.80 with Fresh Prawn Wantan) here is a must try. You may choose to have the noodles along with fresh prawn wantan, Taiwanese chicken chop, pork chop, seafood, signature beef or spicy food. The noodles here are al-dente and presumbly to be home-made as it is hard to find such excellent texture and taste elsewhere, and quality dark soy sauce and soy sauce also being used to impart an excellent flavour to it. The Wantan Mee here resembles some of the famous wantan noodles served by classic Cantonese cafe in Klang Valley, which is an unlikely encounter in Penang.

The fresh prawn wantan that come along with the tok tok noodles here also impressive and truly deserve its label. The filling contains a full small size prawns. Overall, we would say it is a truly awesome Tok Tok Noodles here that we would definitely come back here repeatedly.

Apart from tok tok noodles, Ichi Tong also offer curry noodles, Sichuan spicy noodles, Chaozhou sour and spicy noodles and tomato milk series. Noodles can be chosen from tok tok noodles, bihun, mee sua and maggi noodles. The Sichuan Spicy Noodles (RM 16.80 with Fried Fish Fillet) we had was spicy, peppery and pungent in taste to the extent we choked a few times when having it. Nevertheless, it was a good dish to indulge.

Golden Egg Prawn Fried Rice (RM 13.80) is a must try too. The chef fried the rice till fluffy, soft and each rice granules are distinctive from each others. Seasoning is also spot on and we felt it is best to enjoy the fried rice without the sambal, as the strong sambal taste would kill the natural aroma of the fried rice.

Ichi Tong Brown Sugar Dou Hua (RM 8.80) is an impressive dessert too. It is served immediately to our table once order, and the silky soft taufu fa is a pure indulgence. The brown sugar syrup added also spot on and did not make the entire dessert too sweet to enjoy.

The drink we had, Signature Yuen Yong Milk Tea (RM 6.80) was good too.
