BaBa Phang Nyonya Food @ Jalan Sri Bahari, Georgetown Penang

I am not a big fan of Nyonya food when dining outside. The reasons being Nyonya food were staple in my house when my late grandmother was still around, and Nyonya dishes often come with steep pricing in restaurants. Moreover, the personal nostalgia feeling associated with Nyonya dishes are hard to replace. However, BaBa Phang, a Nyonya restaurant in Jalan Sri Bahari did leave a great impression for me on the authenticity, quality and deliciousness of the dishes here. The price may not be cheap and service may be slow at certain times due to its small business nature, but rest assured a visit here is definitely worthy for a gastronomy gratification.

Asam Tumis Ikan Pari

Due to the different food we have tried here, we will generalize sum up the taste of the food here. Curries and sambal here are our favourite. The depth of flavour, spiciness combined with the usage of spices render the curries so addictive to the extent I could ignore the potential health hazards due to overconsuming it.

If I were to make a comparison, it is more toward a balanced of flavour with a nice milky taste, instead of the sweet or spicy curry you may have elsewhere. Just exactly like the flavour I would yearn and miss from my grandmother's cooking.

The sambal petai is also delicious and nicely cooked.

Kerabu Kacang Botol

Another outstanding dish which we thought would be the Kerabu Kacang Botol. The chefs in BaBa Phang meticulously slice these vegetables into really thin slices and stir fry it well with the kerabu. It is crunchy and refreshing and makes a well introductory dish to freshen up the taste buds.

Jieu Hu Char

The other dishes such as Jieu Hu Char are alright and still my grandmother's flavour are my favourite.

All in all, Nyonya food in Baba Phang is great and you should check it out if you are serious about treating yourself with a good Nyonya meal.
