Tairyo Japanese Restaurant 大渔 @ Icon City, Penang

Despite passing by Tairyo Japanese Restaurant 大渔 in Icon City for numerous times, we never stepped into the restaurant to sample its food for being afraid of its possibly premium price tags. After all, the restaurant is located within Iconic Hotel and occupying a prime spot. As the lockdown due to the pandemic has been lifted and we had been craving for some good food, we decided to splurge at Tairyo for one memorable dinner. No doubt the price tags are premium but there are some affordable range that manage to satiate our cravings for Japanese cuisine.

Just like any conventional Japanese restaurant, Tairyo also has a bible thick menu that offers range of Japanese cuisine ranging from appetizers, sushi, sashimi, ramen to bento set.

We thought of sampling a few dishes at one go therefore bento naturally is our choice. We had a Sake Bento (RM 73) that comes with Takoyaki balls, Teriyaki Salmon, Salmon sashimi and a few pieces of sushi. No doubt the elements in the bento set were good, in particularly the salmon sashimi and Teriyaki salmon. The set is deemed to worth the pennies we paid for.

We also ordered some sides and appetizers to try out. The extensive menu somehow complicated the decision making process and eventually we ordered Hiyayako aka Japanese cold tofu (RM 8) and Kobocha Korokke aka Japanese Pumpkin Croquette (RM 12)

Both were pretty good dishes. The Hiyayako was firm yet sleek in texture, though the gravy could be a little bit more playful to elevate its dishes. Kobocha Korokke is delicious with nice and mid sweet pumpkin fillings in a crispy fried dough.

The Tonkatsu Ramen is competitvely priced at RM 25 and comes with onsen eggs and chashu. It certainly offer the quintessential of a decent ramen - umami and rich soup, along with al-dente noodles. Just right to satisfy for anyone who is craving for a simple ramen in the town.

Overall, Tairyo is worth the visit to enjoy some good Japanese food and it offers range of dishes with different price to choose from. Seats may be a little crowded here, and surprisingly it was tough to get a table during our visit on a weekday dinner hours. Tatami seat also available should you want to have a feel of dining in Japanese style.

If you are staying in Iconic Hotel, you can quote your room number to enjoy additional rebate.
