One of the latest cafe addition in Penang in 2021 is Unknown Cafe. Though the cafe name offers a sense of secrecy, the cafe is not hidden from public view and can be found easily in Jalan Pahang, Georgetown. Unknown cafe gives a modern and minimalistic interior with a large seating area that can host up to dozens of tables. The menu has an extensive range of western dishes, but only cakes and desserts are being served in certain off peak hours. One great challenge in visiting this cafe is the limited car park lots in front of the cafe (only 4 available) and along Jalan Pahang, though later we learn that there is a car park lot in the adjacent Jalan Siam.
At the first glance over the menu at Unknown Cafe, we felt the food is reasonably priced at the range of RM 20+ except for some steaks which has a higher price tag. The menu offers an extensive range of items, inclusive of all-day breakfast and brunch, sushi, Mexican inspired Quesidillas and Tortilla wraps, local Nanyang flavours and Western dishes.
As we had two pieces of cakes, we thought of having something light - Wholemeal Baguette with Grilled Salmon & Eggs (RM 22.90). The dish is appealing aesthetically and the taste is more on the mediocre side. The salmon was purposely rolled to resemble to shape of the sausage and topped with hollaindaise sauce, but it would be great if the salmon is served warmer. We are a little skeptical on the claim that the bread is baguette, as it was soft and not chewy at all.
On the other hand, the cakes served in Unknown Cafe is unique. Peanut lovers would be delighted to enjoy the Peanut Butter Banana Cake (RM 16) as it come with peanuty layered. Meanwhile, the Russian Chocolate Cheesecake (RM 18) offers a nice and complicated flavour, but it could surfeiting if you were to enjoy it on your own. Get 2 or more people to enjoy this cake instead.
