Ask Penangites where to get a good bowl of Hokkien Mee (known as Prawn Mee) and you will be presented a torrent of recommendations in Penang Island. However, little is known about a stall in Permatang Tinggi that has garnered many staunch local supporters. The obscure stall is tucked in a neighbourhood house within a small village and known by the locals as Ah San Hokkien Mee. They have been operating for more than 30 years and business is still brimming as usual everyday.

Ah San Hokkien Mee offers a huge compound for dining but we were struggled to get a table on a weekday lunch hours. It was full house, patronize by majority students and workers who perhaps work within the vicinity. Fortunately we managed to get a table soon and there are noodles left for us still, but we were made to wait at least 10-15 minutes before being served.

The Hokkien Mee did not disappoint. Although it is light in flavour, it is brimming with flavourful prawn scent. We did notice many patrons opt for the instant noodles to go with the Hokkien Mee, which we obliged to follow too. However, the conventional yellow noodles and vermicelli remained a better choice, in our humble opinion.

What makes Ah San Hokkien Mee different from others is they generously put the sambal pasta on each table, and feel free to help yourself for it! The sambal, was fiery hot and gave the soup a strong spicy kick. One spoon for us is more than enough.

Overall, Ah San Hokkien Mee might not be the best Hokkien Mee we have enjoyed thus far but it is worth the visit.
