There was a sudden surge of Mala Hot Pot restaurants in Penang in 2019. One of the newly minted restaurant is 吃香喝辣 along Jalan Perak, occupying the lot previously owned by Kang Beef House. Thus far, 吃香喝辣 is one of our favourite Mala hot pot restaurant that manage to make us addicted and had an impulse returning here for another meal.

Just like any other mala hot pot restaurants, you can pick any of your desired ingredients and differentiate them into two different pot, based on the choice is vegetables or meat.

Apart from Mala Spicy Hot Pot, you can also have Mala Spicy Soup, Fish Head Soup or Tomyam. Apart from that, they also offer Mala Frog Pot, Mala Chicken Pot, Mala Pork Ribs Pot and Mala Seafood Pot with preset ingredients, which is suitable for those who wants a quick fix without going through the hassle of making choices of ingredients.

The pleasant aroma of the hot pot, along with the clever garnishing of sesame and peanuts make it addictive further. Besides, addition of egg also increased the aroma. Somehow, the flavour offer a glimpse of Szechuan taste but has been localized to Malaysians' general taste buds.

Ma La Noodle - Soup

In case you just after an usual bowl of noodle, you can have a bowl of Ma La Soup or Tom Yam Soup, then topped with your choice of noodle and ingredients. The Ma La Soup is indeed spicy and addictive, but we prefer the dried version over the soup version. On the other hand, the Tom Yam tasted alright, though it may be little salty or too much MSG for our liking.
