Traditional Chinese Soup @ Lao Huo Tang 老火汤, Gurney Plaza, Penang

Hailing from Singapore, Lao Huo Tang 老火汤 was a brand started in hawker centre and serve gentle tonics soup made from fresh vegetables, lean meats or pork ribs and flavoured only by natural ingredients. As its popularity grows the brand grows and soon became a restaurant chain in 2011. Finally, the brand came to Gurney Plaza and established the first outlet in Penang, offering 12 different kinds of Cantonese style soup and home fashion cook food. There are many popular dish such as Buddha Jump over The Wall, Classic Ginseng Soup and many more. Good thing is for every pot of soup ordered at Lao Huo Tang, you are able to request for 1 additional time top-up without additional cost.

Soup options here ranged from affordable options such as Lotus Root Soup with Peanut (RM 20.80) to the premium version Classic Ginseng Chicken Soup (RM 65). We went for Lotus Root Soup with Peanut, thinking it will be a more common choice and also due to budget constrain.

The verdict on the soup? It was nice! We enjoyed the depth of the flavour, possibly due to long hours simmering and a significant flavour contributed by the peanuts and chickens. Both of us finish two full pots of the soup without any sense of getting bored of it.

Seafood Hor Fun with Egg Soup (RM 23.80) was alright in the taste. The slight smoky flavour of the gravy was enjoyable and there are still a bit of room for improvement. The premium price tag of the hor fun also carry along 3 big prawns for us to enjoy.

On the other hand, Spinach with Salted and Century Egg (RM 28.80) was nothing exciting. We barely tasted the aroma from both salted and century egg, then the gravy was diluted. It would have been better if the gravy was thicker, with the salted and century eggs coating the vegetables leave instead of floating around in the gravy.

Overall, the soup in Lao Huo Tang is enjoyable and if you have budget to spare, you may consider for other soup options. As for the dishes, we only tried limited variants of it so it is still a question to ponder about.
