Lao Shan Dong Bak Kut Teh 老山东肉骨茶 @ Raja Uda, Butterworth Penang

Not many Bak Kut Teh in Penang managed to register a vivid impression to us. However, recently we bumped into a nice Bak Kut Teh in Raja Uda, Butterworth. Named Lao Shan Dong Bak Kut Teh 老山东肉骨茶, the eatery is a popular eatery among the locals (judging from the crowd when we arrived) and has been under the radar for such a long time. They only serve Bak Kut Teh soup version along with a variety of side dishes. 

There are 3 compelling factors that made us had an enjoyable late dinner here:

a) Relatively affordable price for Bak Kut Teh (RM 10/pax)

b) Good flavour - Mild herb taste though it was a tad salty.

c) A lot of ingredients in the pot of Bak Kut Teh - pick and customize your own without additional cost. 

The portion for 2 we ordered was served in a relatively small claypot with a generous quantity of various ingredients. We got to pick and customize the desirable ingredients in the claypot from the menu, ranging from pork innards, pork stomach, pork belly, pork balls, enoki mushrooms and etc with no additional charge. Ingredients were fresh and the claypot did an excellent job to keep the soup lukewarm. Soup can be top-up without additional cost.

We agreed the soup taste is flavourful. It has moderate herb taste, which is not too strong yet hard to discount its presence. On top of that, we appreciated the soup was clear and not murky, which we enjoyed till to the last drip of it after a top up.
