Local Coffee and Toast to Check out in Singapore

Despite Singapore massive urbanization progress, kopitiam or coffee shop still prevalent and played a significant role in Singapore cuisine. Singapore version of local coffee is sleek, smooth in taste, less acidic and milder in taste compared to Malaysia's version relatively.

Typically, these kopitiam also serves toasts in kaya butter spread, soft boiled eggs, noodles (Mee Siam) and other food. During our recent trips in Singapore, we went to several kopitiam and had our taste buds refreshed with Singapore local coffee. And guess what, we fall in love with these coffee immediately!

Here are some of the kopitiam we have explored in Singapore and hopefully as time goes by, we have more opportunity to check them out!

Good Morning Nanyang Coffee

Good Morning Nanyang Cafe is well known for its Singapore breakfast menu and they serve one of the specialty toast - Orange Ciabatta set (breads baked with caramelised orange peels with kaya filling) but sadly we miss this item!

The coffee shop used to operate at Telok Ayer Hong Lim Green Community Centre but the flagship outlet has since ceased operation. Currently, patrons still can enjoy a cup of coffee and toasts in Far East Plaza at Orchard.

We enjoyed the light and smooth taste of the coffee. It was less acidic and give a sleek finishing, and those in a hurry can actually chug it within a single gulp. On the other hand, their Teh-C is equivalent good too.

Their traditional toast is toasted perfectly with even crisp texture, with a slight retention of moisture that makes it delicious. The Set comes with a cup of coffee or tea, 2x soft boiled egg and toast is a good bargain at $4.70.

Located along the bustling Killiney Road, Killiney Kopitiam Singapore is a big name for coffee shop that has been established in the late 1919.

The Hainanese kopitiam is renowned for charcoal grilled bread toast, a cup of Hainanese coffee and soft boiled egg.

What makes we enjoyed the most here is their concoction of rich kaya spread with butter. The crew in Killiney Kopitiam is ever generous by spreading a thick layer of the concoction over the toast, and it oozed a few occasions when we trying to exert a stronger grip over the toast.

On the other hand, the coffee is mild and sleek. For those who enjoys a robust coffee flavour probably would not feel the caffeine "kick".

This modern coffee shop practices self service. Place your order at the counter and you will be given a vibrator. When it vibrates, just go to the collection counter to collect your food. Some steamed bread may take a slight longer time to prepare, which actually tell you everything is prepared fresh on the spot.

For best saver in tea break, go for the Value Set Meal. It comes with a cup of coffee, a bowl of half boiled egg and bread of your choice.

We thought their forte is their kaya spread. It exhibited good consistency and natural fragrance,  most importantly the sweetness level was fine tune and not artificial. We had their Cheezy French Toast with Kaya, which has a slight salty taste due to the cheese.

On the other hand, their steamed buns are real good. It was served piping hot from the oven to the extent our fingers could not get a grasp on it due to high temperature. The steamed bun was fluffy and soft till it almost melted naturally without any biting, akin like marshmallows. Spread of kaya was rich that it overflowed from the bread but somehow we wished for more of it.
