Jawi House Cafe Gallery @ Lebuh Armenian, Penang

Drop by Jawi House Cafe Gallery to have a taste of Jawi Peranakan cuisine, prepared by Chef Nurulkarim Razha, a descendant of Jawi Peranakan himself.

Jawi Peranakan refers to the offspring of Indian, Arab, Turkish and Persian migrants who married local Malay women. As such, the cuisine emphasis great usage of spices with integration of texture and flavour to deliver a sleek gastronomy experience. Nowadays, the Malay and Jawi Peranakan shared almost the same values of culture and living, though their cuisine preparation may still be slightly different.

Jawi House Cafe Gallery offered a range of favourites included Jawi Bamieh, Lemuni Rice and Jawi Briyani which used long grain basmati rice. Enjoy the dishes with the special made "sambal nyuk" for an elevation of the taste.

Jawi Chicken Curry

I was really excited to discover Nasi Lemuni (RM 10) is available here. Prepared freshly from lemuni leaves planted at the compound of Jawi House, together with blue telang flower then flavoured with garlic, ginger, lemongrass and coconut milk, the rice is unique on its taste. It exhibits a mild herbal scent, with a minimum hint of bitterness derived from the lemuni after the sweetness from the spices. A subtle flavour and definitely enjoyable.

You can have the Nasi Lemuni paired with different side dishes, such as beef rendang, Jawi chicken curry, chunky lamb masala and grilled prawns. We had Jawi Chicken Curry and was pleased with the taste. Not too overwhelming with the coconut milk flavour nor too spicy for our liking.

Serabai (RM 14)

Cucur Udang here is delicious especially with the peanut sauce. Real prawns can be seen in the cucur udang with minimal batter just to give it the body, unlike some stalls that give you a huge load of batter with a pea sized of prawns. A true Malay delicacy to enjoy.

Another rare snack we found here is Serabai, a Malay traditional dish that hardly can be found in Penang except the a stall in Tun Sardon. It is to be eaten with the gula melaka syrup. If we were to compare relatively, it tasted like Chinese huat kuih.
