If you let your eyes slipped past the seemingly uninteresting Taukua (bean curd) sold by an uncle in Apollo Market at Butterworth, then you are missing a real gem.
Pricing at 50 cents per piece, the taukua is highly sought by locals due to its quality. As such, customers come and buy in large quantity and the taukua might finished in a moment. Fret not, as the uncle will get stock replenishment soon enough to cater for the needs of the locals.
And yes, we were no nuts for writing about this taukua as it simply distinguished itself from others! We really enjoyed having the taukua bites. It is really delicious, aromatic and unique.
Uncle selling the taukua has been so accustomized to people taking his pictures we thought. As soon as we mentioned we want to take pictures, he immediately prepare himself and put up a nice pose.
Every piece of the taukua is homemade by the uncle. Upon frying them, you can taste the compact texture, its crispy skin, and most importantly the nice scent of the beans, which not available from the commercially available bean curds. The unparalleled taste offered is probably the major reason of so many returning customers.
For a better taste, add a few drops of soy sauce during the frying process and the taukua will yield an irresistible taste!
If you did not have a kitchen at home. The neighbouring stall can fry the taukua for you for a small fees. Just check out with the uncle selling taukua.
