Kulim has a peculiar seafood restaurant that sit in a middle ouf of nowhere. Named as Kulim Forest Restaurant (森林海鲜村), the restaurant is hard to locate for first timers. It is akin a hidden fortress in a jungle with impressive facade, ornamented with lanterns and light bulbs. The restaurant itself is impressive in features too, having a small pond with a crossing bridge, and individual huts for patrons who prefer to have some secrecy during dinner. When we thought the price will be expensive for a restaurant with such pretentious settings, the total bill was a surprise as it was budget-friendly. However some of the food taste might needs additional touches...
Hainan Steamed Red Fish (RM 33) |
Salted Egg Mantis Prawns (RM 15) |
Salted Fish Kailan (RM 12) |
The restaurant serves a range of fish but we were intrigued by their Hainan Steamed Red Fish (RM 33) upon their crew's mention. She mentioned it is a combination of sour and spicy, which triggered our interest. No doubt the fish was fresh, the promised tasted was there, and it was served along with lady fingers. At one instance, the taste is akin of to "kiam hu kut gulai", a popular Nyonya dish.
Salted Egg Mantis Prawns (RM 15) was lacking the "explosive" taste which we expected. It tasted more like fragment of crackers with mucus coating. However given the price, we could not requested for more.
Overall, the dishes were alright but was insufficient to give the wow factors. The environment was nice though.
