Tai Tong restaurant is one of the oldest dim sum establishment in Penang. It is believed to established in the 1950s and has appeased the tongue of many Georgetown folks, especially our parents' generation. I recalled my parents' excitement when I told them we will be going to Tai Tong for dinner. The restaurant still exists on its original facade today and has a group of senior crews, just like a building from the past trapped in the time travel. Although the dim sum served here nowadays is hard to compared to those during its prime days, its popularity still high among locals and tourists.
Above pictures sum up what we had for the dim sum breakfast. Overall, it was not really an impressive dim sum session but there were a few items that stood up. Carrot cakes, taro dumpling and egg tarts were above average, where as the rest of the items were mediocre. It was more of a reminiscent of coming back to Tai Tong Restaurant for dim sum, and they deserve support from locals to continue the legacy and heritage value of Georgetown.
When Mooncake Festival (15th day of 8th month in Chinese Lunar Calendar) is approaching, the entire restaurant is decorated with lanterns, making it an unique scene to look at. The restaurants also serve mooncakes to prepare for the mooncake festival as well.
