Matsu Japanese Restaurant @ Lone Pine Hotel, Batu Ferringhi, Penang

Matsu Japanese Restaurant is perhaps the only Japanese restaurant along the touristy beach line of Batu Ferringhi in Penang. Secluded on the first floor of Lone Pine Hotel, not many Penangites know its existence and this assure you will be having a quiet dining here. The restaurant is not big in size and probably can only hold up to 30-40 people maximum at one time, thus it is advisable to book an appointment. On top of that, if you are after specific Japanese cuisine such as Sashimi or Wagyu, you shall call up to check its availability as most Sashimi during our visit was unavailable except Sake (Salmon). Nevertheless, rest assured quality food is served, service is great though might be a little bit slow due to presence of one crew only to handle the whole restaurant.

We wanted to have Toro Salmon (Salmon Belly, RM 44.30) initially but was told most of the Sashimi was unavailable, making us settled for Sake (Salmon, RM 37.30) instead. Well, The Salmon Sashimi was indeeed fresh and comes in thick slices, a bit buttery yet sleek in taste. Therefore, we deduced the unavailability of most sashimi was due to the restaurant plans to serve fresh items only.

As for some main dishes to fill up the stomach, our choice - Spicy Miso Ramen (RM 25.65) was again unavailable, leaving us to opt for Gomoku Ramen (RM 25.65) as we wanted to have some hot soup. It was a great choice overall, as the special broth was smooth and rich in taste. Then there were plenty of seafood, chicken and vegetables served along the Ramen, making this bowl of Ramen a good bargain of the night.

Una Don (Grilled Eel in Rice Bowl, RM 53.60) is the perfect choice for someone who loves unagi. It has a generous portion of unagi complemented with dark Japanese soy sauce that gives it a sweet taste. The unagi itself possessed a firm and flaky flesh, leaving a pleasant taste on the palate upon consuming. Without doubt, this simple dish with a bowl of rice topped with pieces of unagi was a true enjoyment for the night.

Again, our dessert choice - Matcha Tiramisu (RM 21) was unavailable so we had Black Sesame Ice Cream (RM 14) instead. We definitely did not enjoy it as the ice cream was hard and full with ice crystal to the extent scooping it was a tough task. Moreover, black sasame flavour was not dominant and our tongue was having a hard time with the ice crystals. Not a good end for the night, definitely.

Despite so many food choices were unavailable, we were satisfied with the dining here in overall. At least it managed to end our craving for some decent Japanese cuisine!
