If you are looking for decent seafood in Kedah yet do not fall into expensive tourist trap, then Huat Siong Seafood Restaurant 發祥海鮮飯店 is a great choice. The restaurant is located at Kuala Kedah, slightly off from the main town Alor Setar and is a popular destination among the locals. It has a local kopitiam setting and not air-conditioned, but the inexpensive price tags should justify its environment. However as of May 2018, the restaurant only practice walk-ins and no advance booking is allowed.

One of the signature and unique dish that requires advance booking (we wonder how it can be done now) is their Pumpkin Prawn (RM 68). The prawns are served inside a pumpkin, and drenched with yellowish condiments that has strong and sweet coconut scent. We have never encountered such a dish elsewhere and it is a definite must try if you happen to visit here.

Among other dishes we have tried that day included Sour Plum Red Snapper (RM 42). Flesh of the fish is delicate and fresh, and the sour plum sauce is refreshing yet not overwhelming to kill off the natural taste of the red snapper. The other two carnivorous dishes we had were Pork Ribs (RM 18), which are crunchy and Starfruit Chicken (RM 18), which is an unique combination as well. These are the few highlights of the dinner we had.

On the contrary, the vegetable selection are less inspiring compared to the meats. Taukau Kerabu (RM 9) is a good combination but there were insufficient kerabu to give the refreshing sensation and lack the lime tanginess as well. Eggplant on the other han was alright but it was a normal dish just to offset the carnivorous element on the table.
