西公園飯店 See Kong Ooi used to be a coffee shop in Transfer Road ages ago. As time passes by, the same See Kong Ooi has moved out from its previous location and evolved into a restaurant, serving Hokkien and Hainanese dishes, albeit still located at Transfer Road. The restaurant's name has ringed our bell since I read a write-up on them in newspaper, and we only managed to come here recently. Food menu is relatively simple here, primarily revolves around home cooked dishes. Price wise we feel it is the standard market rate, not too expensive nor affordable but the portion might be an issue to whet those with big appetite.
The first item that caught our attention was Asam Prawn (RM 26, small). It was served with dark coloured gravy, which was appeasing when eat along with white rice. We had no grudge on the prawn taste, as the essence of gravy has blended well with prawns it but somehow asam taste was barely tasted. As a matter of fact, we could take it as a dark soy sauce prawn instead of asam prawn.
Salted Fish Minced Meat was one lovely dish we had during the night. Minced meat texture was great and coupled with the slightly salty condiments made this simple dish into great wondrous. It would go even better if eaten along with porridge.
Chili long beans were cooked decently into nice texture, though a tad more spicy would have been greater. Fermented bean curds with tofu was another normal dish just to complement the array of dishes for the night.
Overall, it was a mixture of good and mediocre home cooked dishes we had for the night. Salted Fish Minced Meat was memorable, and Asam Prawn registered a bold and nice taste albeit it did not possess any asam taste.
