Kesum Art Restaurant @ Stewart Lane, Georgetown, Penang

People used to say Penang is a food heaven and today I found another reason to justify such a bold statement. This is because you can find a variety of cuisine in Penang, and we discovered a hearty and homey restaurant that sells Johor (the state at the southern tip of Penisular Malaysia) cuisine - Kesum Art Restaurant in Stewart Lane. It is indeed a rare sighting to get Johor cuisine in Penang, and moreover the set here is affordable, ranging from RM 23 - RM 27.

The Kitchen at Kesum Art Restaurant is manned by an authentic Johorean, whom got inspired by her mother to prepare Johor cuisine. She might be young but her dishes are aspiring with the very own distinctive Johor traits.

Satay (Chicken or Beef)
The satay here is commendable. It is nicely grilled and pack with juicy meat. One of the best satay in town.

Laksa Johor
Kesum Art Restaurant proudly serves Laksa, a very popular dish among Malaysians but it is of Johor origin. The major differences between Laksa Johor and Laksa in the other states is the noodles being used, whereby Laksa Johor used Spaghetti noodles. The history of usage of spaghetti noodles in Laksa Johor can be traced till when the late Sultan Johor, Sultan Abu Bakar instructed his chefs to use spaghetti noodles after visited Europe.

Another proud dishes worthy try here is Botok-botok. It is originated from Johor but according to the chefs, not many Johoreans know how to make Botok-botok nowadays. It comes with a fresh ocean fish wrap in a type of edible leaves, then soused with thick coconut curry paste and steam to perfection. Best eaten it along with white rice and remember to douse it with the sauces given.

As a matter of fact, Botok-botok sounds exactly like Otak-otak but the major difference is Botok-botok is served with the whole fish intact while Otak-otak is minced fish.
