The synonym of Penang Island as a food heaven is well reflected at this Relau 88 Laksa which concealed within a garden shop. It strengthens the claims of food heaven as almost every corner of Penang can be turned into an eatery. Initially, even Penangites might not aware of this place but the popularity might have rose after a few bloggers published reviews on it. The menu is direct as they are selling Penang Laksa, or known as Asam Laksa only but side dishes such as fried popiah and the fishballs are worthy to be tried.
Although Penang are well known to produce one of the best Asam Laksa in the region but currently there are only a handful of mouth-watering Asam Laksa eateries we could name, sad but true. Nevertheless, we are glad to add Relau 88 Laksa to the our favorite list. The laksa serves here has a balanced between sweet, sour, spicy and savoury, much appeasing to the taste buds. Abundance of shredded fish, which we supposed is ikan kembung (mackerel) can be seen in the soup, contributing to the laksa broth consistency and tad of sweetness in the midst of the pleasant sour and spicy taste. Each bowl of laksa cost RM 4.00.
If your budget allows you to stretch a little bit more for some snacks, do consider the fried popiah to dip into the laksa broth or their homemade fish balls.
For something cooling in the afternoon, the eatery does serve either cendol or ais kacang. The ais kacang was alright to quench the thirst but not something big to shout about.
