Being an eatery that sells bowls of tomyam noodles of customized ingredients, seafood porridge and fish noodles, Super Fish Noodle Box along Jalan Magazine has rose to popularity in social media recently. Other than various hot foods, another popularity item here is their colourful drink with bites served on top. On a chilly raining night, we were here for a trial and the expectations were mixture of feelings...
Remarks: Super Fish Noodle Box has since ceased operation
Tomyam noodles fans will be excited to see the array of ingredients display for selection. Great job for the shop management for storing the food ingredients in chiller, while the vegetables were wrapped with cling film to ensure its freshness. On top of that, the prices were properly labelled so you can budget your meal wisely.
Feeling like a lazy bum for that night, we ordered the preset Fried Fish Tomyam Maggi Mee (RM 9.90). Some may enjoy the sweet based with a sharp acidity tomyam soup but we felt it was normal, in fact a slight let down due to the absence of spiciness or burning sensation we expected from tomyam. Moreover, the fried fish fillets were disappointing. It was fried to tempura akin texture but neither essence of tempura or fried fish were present. It felt like a mere some thick and soggy flour coating god knows what filling.
On the other hand, the XO Seafood Porridge (RM 18.50) smells promising when the moment it was served but the taste was lackluster. There were only a fistful of ingredients - a prawn, a slice of abalone and little fish flesh that almost vanished in the porridge. We were glad the prawn was fresh though. Besides, the porridge texture was not definitely our preference as we could feel its grainy rice capsule. It just does not feel right and the entire porridge got blunt and dull soon. Therefore, RM 18.50 was definitely overpriced.
One thing that we were glad for the night was the DrinknBite. There are 3 options of bites - fries, fried chicken and fish skins to compliment 4 different types of colourful drinks - yellow (mango with chili), red (roselle), white (dried lemon) and blue (could not recall). Although the spicy fried chicken (option to go for Thai style) was another huge let down, the mango with chili (Mango Lah) was inspiring. It comes with nicely mixed mango cordial and a piece of chili that has a nice blend of sweet taste followed by a tad of burning taste.
Overall, we felt the foods just did not click to our taste buds but that was just our own preferences. However, the drinks probably are something to go after, either for an Instagram shot or just looks cool walking around in the town with it.
