Sugar On Top, or abbreviated as SOT has came into Penang after establishing a few outlets in Johor Bahru. They rose to certain certain popularity in social media when Happy Polla visited their outlets, seemingly a form of advertisement they were trying to create. The cafe is housed within a two-storey shoplot along Jalan Bawasah and serves a variety of western dishes such as burgers, breakfast choices, pastas and desserts. The food price here are slightly higher than majority in the town though.
Hokkaido Matcha Hotcake (RM 18.90) is a popular dessert choice here due to its oozing filling upon slicing the larva cake. The larva filling is thick in taste and still hot upon slicing it. A great combination is yielded when the hot larva filling is complemented with the cold Matcha ice cream. Contrary to the reviews on Facebook which mention the ice cream was partially melted upon served, similar case did not happen to us and we were glad about it.
Waffled up (RM 25.90) appears to be a platter for co-sharing during a breakfast session. It comes with 4 pieces of quarter waffle, sausages, a handful of hash browns, scrambled egg and salad. We particularly enjoyed the hash browns which was fried to fluffy and golden colour. While we thought the flour of the waffles did not mix well and losing a bit of its flaky characteristics, we were told it was done such as way to strike a balance so that waffle could retain its average crispiness in room temperature. Its scrambled egg on the other hand, was a slight let down to the entire dish as it was over buttery, resulted a cloying or surfeiting feeling after a few spoon of it.
