Top 5 Wantan Mee in Penang

Though Wantan Mee is a Cantonese dish and Cantonese are not the dominant ethnic in Penang, it is still a very popular choices of meal by Penangites, as hawkers selling Wantan Mee can be seen across in the state. Some people may call it the old way, "Tok Tok Mee".

As the name suggests, the dish usually has Wantan (meat/shrimp dumplings) and char siew (barbecued pork slices) added, then served in either dry or soup version. In dry version, the al-dente noodles are dressed with mixture of dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil and garnished with chopped spring onions. In soup version, the noodles are served in either steaming hot chicken or pork based broth.

We enjoy both version of Wantan Mee, therefore we have found these 5 places that we would be craving for.

This standalone make shift stall has been selling Wantan Mee for decades, located at the cross junction of Lebuh Melayu, Lorong Toh Aka and Lorong Ikan. Slim and springy noodle with watery soy sauce, addition of a spoonful of sambal makes it wonderful. Do take note that they only operate during weekdays and it is difficult to find an empty table during lunch hour.

We loves the thickness of their soy sauce that makes the noodle sinfully palatable. Try heighten the flavour with a little bit of sambal. Their soup version is equally great as well.

Another hidden gem of Wantan Mee, shading in the neighborhood of Island Glades. Al-dente noodle with balance mixture of soy sauce and sesame oil yielded a nice and umami taste. Though the wantan was small in size but it packed with nice filling.
