Nyonya cuisine is always associated with subtle flavors due to its unique recipes, a creation from the literal marriage between Chinese and locals in Malay Archipelago. The classic Nyonya cuisines are not cheap, due to its incredibly time consuming, involvement of meticulous steps and mastery of skills in usage of tools and spices to churn out the delicate dishes. However as Iconic Hotel in Bukit Mertajam rolls out their Taste of Nyonya Buffet Dinner every Friday and Saturday, we get to experience an array of Nyonya cuisines with just RM 78++, from today till 31 August 2017.

Most people tend to associate Nyonya food with its varieties of kuih-muih. We spotted almost all of them here, such as Ondeh Ondeh, Pulut Tekan, Kueh Bingku, Kueh Lapis, Chai Kueh, Kueh Koo, Kueh Koci, Pulut Inti and etc. There are a total of 20 different types of Nyonya Kuih being served here, and the feeling on feasting on all of them at once were awesome.
Gado-gado Kuah Kacang, Ulam-ulaman, Fruits Rojak |
Ulam-ulaman, Fruits Rojak |
Ikan Masin Goreng, Jiu Hu Char, buah jeruk, Keropok |
When we popped by the appetizers session, a few of the dishes that we often come across such as Ikan Masin Goreng, Jiu Hu Char, Lobak , Tempe, Rojak buah and Ulam-ulaman are here. If we have more stomach allowance, definitely we would take more of their rojak buah and lobak.
Nasi Ulam Istemewa, Fried Items, Udang, Pasta Au Gratin, Lemak Stew, Otak Otak Malanan Laut, Inchi Kabin |
Ikan Puri, Ayam Pong Teh, Telur Dadar Cincaluk, Pucuk Ubi Masak Lemak, Udang Goreng Asam, Kari Kapitan, Nyonya Chap Chye |
The outlay of the main courses section are such impressive when all the trays are fully opened. Relish and permeate tongue with all the spices infused dishes, and have a taste on all the different curries used to cook the dishes. The popular Ayam Pong Teh, Kari Kapitan and Otak-otak which are the must try dishes whenever dining in a Nyonya restaurant is spotted here.
Have a taste of the DIY Nyonya Laksa Station at the corner of restaurant. Put a few slices of chicken, fishballs, and topped up the bowl with the creamy laksa soup. Fine tune the taste into perfection by adding some chili paste, lime and fried shallots. This bowl of own made laksa certainly cast some weight to a lot of hawkers laksa out there.
Another corner of the restaurant features some freshly prepared popiah and kueh pie tee. Everything is made on the spot upon ordering.
Ikan, udang dan sotong bakar |
Do not miss out their action counter to get some snacks such as fried cempedak and pisang goreng. Amazingly, there are grilled fish, prawns and squid too, whereby the hotel has laid out a neat numbering system to ensure no order will be missed. We reckon the chefs must know that we enjoy chili paste a lot, as he sprunged a generous quantity of chili into the grilled food for us, and the taste were great.
Ais Kacang |
Ice cream |
End your meal with a selection of cakes, fruits, ice kacang or ice cream. We loved how they gorgeously display the fruits. The truth is, we can feel Iconic hotel F&B team did a wonderful job in displaying all their food, apart of the wonderful taste.
Pulut Serawa Durian, Pengat Durian, Bubur Pulut Hitam, Durian cream puff, Sagu Gula Melaka, Bubur Cha Cha |
Wait, wait wait. Durian in hotel? Such a rare occasion!
You must not miss out their pulut serawa durian, pengat durian and durian cream puff if you are a durian connoisseurs. The night just becomes wonderful with the presence of durian.
