Tucked within New Bob Center commercial lot along Jalan Gottlieb, Mellowcup Coffee is the sole cafe in Penang and Malaysia that brew the exclusive coffee blend - Blooms. This coffee blend is an innovation by the famous TVB actor, Moses Chan. It was hearsay that Moses had invested over 1.7 millions into his coffee brand, perfecting it via research in own laboratory and conducting quality assurances by drinking at least 50 cups of coffee every single day.
Needless the say, the essence of coffee are depending on many factors other than the coffee beans. Thus, the young barista lady cum owner at Mellowcup Coffee aspires to serve the best specialty coffee and pourover coffee to Mellowcup coffee's patrons. She believes the third waves of coffee has begun to strike Penang, whereby people are starting to appreciate specialty coffee and considering coffee as an artisan drink.

Though pourover coffee sounds simple and involve some elementary tools but the ritual involve some physical and chemical process, producing a noticeably more complex and delicate final cup of coffee. We were privileged by having the lady boss demonstrated the entire pourover process in front of us, and in fact all patrons at Mellowcup Coffee gets to enjoy this.
Initially, the grounded coffee is added to the filter and weigh accurately. Pourover coffee emphasizes on continuously replenishing the liquid surrounding the coffee grounds with new and fresh water, promoting a faster and efficient brew. The pouring is separated into a few times. During the first pour, which is called wetting, just enough water is added to wet all the grounds, letting the carbon dioxide entrapped in the beans escapes and bubbles out. As carbon dioxide is being released, creating a blossoming magical effect, whereby the grounds will rise up en masse.
After the carbon dioxide escapes, it is continued with pouring for dissolution stages, whereby hot water will dissolve the solubles in the beans, followed by diffusion to transport all the organic substances out of the beans, resulting a subtle and pleasant cup of coffee.
As the limited item on the menu, Ice Drip Coffee (RM 18.00) is a must try here. The beans are extracted at a corner of the bar over the day, and only 12 bottles are produced everyday. Some loyal customers even purchase some bottles and store at home in the refrigerator, as the flavour profile might develop across time.
Other than Ice Drip Coffee, the Signature Coffee (RM 14.00) is another specialty. Brewed using Brazilian coffee beans, it gives a subtle and chocolaty sensation that linger longer in the mouth.

Assuming you are not a coffee person or the night is getting late for a cup of coffee, Moses Chan's Blooms also blends a range of tea. Savouring a cup of tea is good for mediating, and perhaps excellent for detoxifying at the meantime. We had a cup of Crimson Blend (RM 12.90), a caffeine free herbal that deliver a punch of lemony and aromatic lemongrass taste, with a hint of ginger lingers around the tongue. While the taste is smooth, it brings a hint of sharpness in the end. Red colour rosy and hibiscus yield a romantic sensation for the tea.
Healthy conscious patron can opt for Peppermint Gred A (RM 12.90) for a refreshing, light and natural flavor. It offers a pleasant and sweet peppermint taste, with a slight cooling sensation towards the end of the sip.
The cafe also offer a range of main courses such as spaghetti, bento and western dishes for patron who seek for something more stomach fulfilling. We sampled Chili Aglio Olio (RM 15.90) and Spaghetti Carbonara (RM 17.80), and is pleased with its al-dente noodles. Both spaghetti are served alongside slices of turkey bacon. If you prefer a more piquant dish, chili aglio olio is the choice due to its chili sensation. Whilst spaghetti carbonara is catered for those who simply prefer carbohydrates, as the name literally suggested. A substantial quantity of onion slices are noticed in the spaghetti as well.
Well, both the spaghetti are perfected with the presence of a runny egg yolk. Wait a moment, you could even enhance it by opting for Japanese Hot Spring Egg ( Soft-Cooked Eggs) instead by topping another RM 3.50! Let your imagination runs wild when the perfectly poached egg with creamy and silky egg white is pricked with the fork, adding a body and balance to the spaghetti noodles and sauce. It simply outmatch any normal eggs and brings the entire dish into gustatory spotlight, making a divine bicultural union but still retaining the dish as distinctly Italian.
For a sweet ending, waffles with different toppings are available here. One can opt for baked marshmallows, chocolate and bananas or Japanese Uji Matcha Red Beans. We had a Belgium Berry Berries Waffles (RM 19.80), and it comes alongside two scoop of ice cream. Savour the dessert while it just served in order to enjoy the equilibrium between crispy waffle and smooth ice cream.
