Dendeng and Soft Shell Crab Burger @ D'Marta Cafe, Penang

Instead of any regular patties such as chicken, beef, fish, or even kangaroo meat sandwiched between the burger buns, it is now a fried soft shell crab with the legs lurking outside the buns! The soft shell crab then is topped with a piece of semi melted cheese, and lay on a bed of cabbages and lettuce leaves. 

So how was the taste? Apart from the strong thousand island and mild chili taste, the crispy soft shell crabs are felt the most at the legs lurking out from the buns. Of course it comes with a slight premium price compared to other burgers with RM 15 for one.

The burger stalls also selling various burgers, and another notable one is Dendeng, the first one in Penang. It is a slice of thin sheet of preserved meat - chicken or beef, and slotted in between burger buns, burgers of wraps. The meat was crisp and char after burnt on the hot charcoal fire, akin to Chinese Bak Kwa.

When we ordered a bowl of Mee Kuah Udang (RM 14.00), we were warned about the hot burning potential of the soup, which turned out to be quite true. It was not only hot spicy, and also with a hint of sweet and oily. If we were to make a comparison, it tasted like a very oily Penang Hokkien Mee to me. 

Although we agreed the soup was nice but it was too greasy to take more than few scoops. And if you are not a fans of prawns, you may opt for mixture of prawns and soft shell crabs, or soft shell crabs alone with a different pricing.

In fact, D'Marta Cafe is an assembly point of various "hawkers". Other than soft shell crab burgers, another notable must try dish would be their Martabak. It is akin of Chinese pancake with fillings, and they have a range of more than 30 choices of fillings to be chosen from.

Nonetheless, the most special filling would be Nutella! We picked a combination of Nutella, peanut and cheese (RM 6.90), and it was indeed finger licking good though the cheese might have given it a greasy feeling.

Soft shell crab burgers, Nutella martabak, Mee Kuah Udang or even dendeng are not the most renowned meal over here actually. Most patrons come for a feast of seafood platter. Too bad we had limited stomach and could not have a try on it. If you have tried them, please share us your experience on it.
