Without huge billboard or permanent signage, this hidden spot in Batu Lanchang is easy to miss if you do not know where to look. However for the regulars, they knows exactly where to find this humble stall serving old-school economy-style soy sauce fried mee hun and traditional tongsui.
Located in the common open space of grass field, right in front of the flats along the bustling Jalan Tan Teh Hwa Lim, the stall is tucked under a simple zinc-roofed shelter. If you are familiar with Nasi Lemak Liverpool, it is located just few steps away.
The menu is simple and affordable, with their fried noodles and tongsui starting from just RM 2. The noodles option are meehun, yellow noodle, kwayteow and Maggie where you can mix and match them. You can also add on various sides such as egg, curry chicken, popiah, vegetarian duck and more, making it easy to put together a simple yet satisfying plate for a fulfilling meal.
What makes this place even more nostalgic is the traditional way they prepare the food. They still fry and cook using a charcoal stove, giving the noodles that smoky, old-school flavours that we dearly miss, and its increasingly rare to come by these days.
For many locals, the perfect tea-break combination is a plate of fried noodles paired with a warm bowl of tongsui. Choosing the tongsui can be the hardest part because there are so many familiar and classic favourites to pick from. The options include bubur pulut hitam, bubur cha cha, peanut soup, red beans soup, bubur gandum, barley beancurd soup and green pea soup. They are priced between RM 2 to RM 3 only, making this a wonderfully affordable way to satisfy a sweet craving.
Whenever we are in the area, we like to drop by and take away some of these old time favourites. Sometimes, they become a simple dessert after lunch or we save them for an afternoon tea break at home.
It's nothing fancy, but perhaps that is exactly what makes this little Batu Lanchang food spot loved by us. Simple food, charcoal cooked flavours, keeping the nostalgic desserts alive and prices that remind you of the good old days.
