Raku raku is a humble and unpretentious café tucked along Nagore road, offering an ochazuke-focused menu that immediately caught our attention. Ochazuke may be a comforting staple in Japanese homes, but it is rarely seen on menus in Penang’s Japanese restaurants so discovering it here was a pleasant surprise.
The moment we stepped inside Raku Raku, the space feels quiet and welcoming. The interior is simple and functional, dressed in warm tones that reflect the café’s understated menu. Nothing feels excessive or forced, making it a comfortable place to slow down and enjoy a meal. The menu is straightforward, featuring ochazuke, donburi, pasta, light bites, and drinks.

| Chicken Hambagu RM 24 |
We tried the Chicken Hambagu Ochazuke, which comes with two homemade chicken patties garnished with grated daikon, seaweed, spring onions, and bubu arare. The patties were well-seasoned with a firm yet tender texture. Guests can choose between two types of dashi, and we opted for the Genmaicha Dashi over the Awase Dashi. The best way to enjoy it is to taste the rice on its own first, then slowly pour in the broth according to your preference, allowing the gentle umami flavours to unfold.
The homemade croquettes were another highlight. Both the kani and pork versions were nicely executed, with a lightly crisp exterior giving way to a soft, creamy interior. The balance between mashed potatoes and meat was spot on, well-seasoned with a gentle richness that melts in the mouth. A dip into the sauce adds an extra layer of creamy, savoury goodness, making them thoroughly satisfying.
