The Oriental Pearl Tower 东方明珠 is undoubtedly one of Shanghai’s most iconic landmarks. Located in Lujiazui, Pudong New Area, this futuristic tower has defined Shanghai’s skyline since its completion in 1995. With its distinctive spheres and bold design, it remains a must-see attraction for first-time visitors and repeat travellers alike.
Inside the tower, visitors can enjoy a range of experiences, from dining at the Revolving Restaurant, walking on thrilling glass-floor observatories, to soaking in sweeping panoramic views from various observation decks. While all of these sound exciting, we personally found the tower most captivating when admired from afar, especially during sunrise and dusk.
If you’re planning a photography-focused itinerary like us, here are some of the best spots to capture the Oriental Pearl Tower at its finest.
Sunrise View That Takes Your Breath Away
Get an early night and wake up before dawn. Head to Zhapu Road Bridge 乍浦路桥, where you’ll be rewarded with a stunning sunrise shot of the Oriental Pearl Tower framed by the bridge in the foreground. On calm mornings, the reflection on the river creates a magical, mirror-like scene.
Nanjing East Road
This lesser-known street surprised us. During the early morning, it’s quiet and serene, offering a beautiful street perspective with the Oriental Pearl Tower rising in the background, perfect for calm, city-life shots without the crowds.
The Bund (Morning & Dusk)
A stroll along The Bund offers a majestic view of the Lujiazui skyline, with the Oriental Pearl Tower standing proudly among the modern skyscrapers. It’s the most popular viewing spot, which also means heavy crowds later in the day.
Come early in the morning to enjoy the skyline in peace.
Return again at dusk, when the tower lights up, this glowing transformation is a scene you absolutely shouldn’t miss.
The Bund (Night Photography)
Yes, The Bund deserves another mention. At night, the silky water reflections of the colourful towers across the Huangpu River create postcard-worthy shots, especially for long-exposure photography lovers.

The Bund Ferry
For just CNY 2, hop on the ferry from Jinling Road East Pier to Dongchang Road. This short ride brings you incredibly close to the Oriental Pearl Tower and offers stunning perspectives of both Pudong and The Bund.
For foreigners:
Open your Alipay app → Tap “Transport” → Activate Shanghai Transport Bus → Tap in before entering the pier gate.
Ferry operation hours: 7:00 AM – 6:30 PM
Mingzhu Roundabout 明珠环岛
Also known as the Circular Pedestrian Bridge at Lujiazui, this elevated walkway allows you to get up close to the Oriental Pearl Tower. From above, you can capture dynamic shots of the tower alongside the constant flow of cars circling the roundabout below.
Disney China Flagship Store (Lujiazui)
Here’s a fun twist—combine the Oriental Pearl Tower with a touch of Disney magic. This spot lets you frame the tower with fairy-tale vibes, and of course, shop for Shanghai Disney's exclusive merchandise.
How to get there:
Metro Line 2, Lujiazui Station, Exit 2
The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong
Our personal favourite portrait spot. Standing in front of The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong, you can perfectly frame yourself with the Oriental Pearl Tower towering just behind, it's close, elegant, and incredibly photogenic.
Final Tip
Take your time exploring Lujiazui. Walk around, change angles, and you’ll likely discover new perspectives to capture the Oriental Pearl Tower in ways that feel uniquely yours.
