Mee Penang Bukit Tambun @ Simpang Ampat, Penang

Tucked away in a unnoticed corner near to exit from Simpang Ampat to North-South Expressway in Seberang Perai Selatan lies Mee Penang, a popular Mee Goreng Stall frequented by locals regardless of races. They have been operating for 28 years, and behind the wok is Chef Hashim, a gifted chef as he fries delicious noodles here while his wife and mother-in-law prepare the unique sweet potato sauces that contributed to the awesomeness of the noodle. It is not just a regular Mee Goreng stall, as they offer a range of dishes to be eaten along with their signature Mee Goreng for a total relish.

Good news is all pregnant ladies are entitled to eat at Mee Penang for a mere RM1 for a plate of delicious Mee Goreng!

Mee Sotong (RM 6)

The signature here is their Mee Goreng, but we recommend you top up another RM1 to enjoy the sotong. To make their Mee Goreng unique, Chef Hashim uses Chinese wok with a thinner carbon steel to allow more heat infuse to the noodles, resulting a stronger smoky taste. We enjoyed the hint of sweetness in the noodles, contributed by the special sauces prepared by Chef Hashim's wife and mother-in-law that used more sweet potatoes than usual.

For a different taste, add the magic sauce available in every table to your plate of noodle. There are 2 types of sauce, one is of sweeter taste while another one is more spicy. Each makes the noodles different and you can fine tune the flavour to your liking!

Mee Rebus (RM 5)

Needless to say, their Mee Rebus is richer and denser in taste thanks to the sweet potato sauces. It comes with a generous quantity of ingredients, and the crispy prawn crackers were particularly enjoyable when it is doused with the gravy.

Rojak (RM 5)

Apart of Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus, Restaurant Mee Penang also offers a range dishes to be eaten along with their noodles. Their Pasembur is a good alternative Should you prefer to skip the carbohydrate load from the yellow noodles.

For best enjoyment of the Mee Goreng, order a plate of Ayam 3 Rasa or Sotong 3 Rasa. The taste is rich and complex, having a hint of spiciness, some sweetness and a tad of refreshing taste. When the thick gravy comes in contact with the mee goreng, it elevates the plate of noodles entirely! If you were to compare, the Sotong 3 Rasa tasted akin like Chinese version of cuttlefish salad with peanut sauce with the absence of peanut but stronger taste.

These 2 dishes are popular items here that the Ayam 3 Rasa was sold out around 4.30pm!

The Rojak is equally good. We prefer the less sticky peanut gravy used here and surprised to find that the thinner consistency did not make the rojak loses it shines.

Mee Penang also offers a range of drinks. Teh Ais Raja Sultan (RM 3) is one of the popular items here, as the concoction comes with cincau in Teh Tarik Ais. Meanwhile, Air TV3 (RM 2) is similar to Ais Kacang and I enjoyed it as the sweetness level is just alright.

For a more refreshing sensation, have a cup of Limau Ais or Jus Amera to cool down your body.
