The Hidden Teochew Porridge Stall @ Hutton Lane, Georgetown, Penang

Despite being a Penangite for near to 3 decades, the cuisine flair in this heritage city is always there to surprise us. Recently, we discovered a modest Teochew porridge stall concealed within an open space next to New Savoy Hotel in Hutton Lane. Apparently, this stall is popular among those who know its presence and you would not realise its existence even you are walking along Hutton Lane!

This Teochew porridge stall practically bears no name and feature a simple setting by having about half a dozen tables available for seating. The aunty and uncle manning the stall know most of the regulars patron here - to serve the regular's choice of either porridge or rice. A handful of dishes are available for selection but try to be here early as most of the dishes would be finished by 1pm.

The porridge hits all the essential quality of Teochew porridge - plain, not flavoured and the grains still stay as a whole. It is to be complemented by the array of classic favorites available here such as small anchovies, pickled vegetables, braised pork, radish and etc. Our favorites are braised pork and onion small prawns. It spiced the plain porridge, allowing you enjoy the original taste of each of the dish.

Such a comforting lunch for 2 cost us RM 15. However be mindful the place might get slightly stuffy if weather is hot.
