Ye Lai Xiang Char Koay Teow 夜来香炒粿条 @ Raja Uda, Penang

Char Koay Teow is almost synonymous to Penang and this plate of greasy, fattening yet aromatic fried flat noodles is an indulgence for many Penangites and tourists. There are many famous Char Koay Teow in Penang Island but how about Penang Mainland? Well, we discovered one Char Koay Teow with good wok hei and fried using charcoal, and this humble stall with the name Ye Lai Xiang Char Koay Teow 夜来香炒粿条 is tucked within a coffee shop at Raja Uda with the name.

There has been hearsay that the owner of Ye Lai Xiang Char Koay Teow is notorious of his bad temper but during our time there was no such experience. The chef uses charcoal to fry the koay teow, and we observed that he only fry 2 plates at one go to ensure quality of the final product.

The bowl of aromatic Char Koay Teow has good wok hei, and come along smooth koay teow with praws, lap cheong, egg and surprisingly the inclusion of radish to give it a tad of pleasant salty sensation.
