The Junk Cafe @ Wayang Street, Kuching, Sarawak

The Junk Cafe at Wayang Street, Kuching, Sarawak is considered one of the cafe that is popular among the locals and tourists. Featuring an unique theme in different segments of the restaurant, the cafe offers an one of a kind unique experience. The menu primarily revolves around Western fusion cuisine with a higher price tags if compared to the eateries in Kuching, service is friendly but messy, and the food taste was not impressive at all..

A simple one paged menu on the main dishes made me derive into the decision well, as the menu has a heavy focus on the drinks instead. We had a Lemongrass Chicken (RM 36.00), which is served in big portion. The chicken has a slight sharp tangy sensation, apart from the aromatic portfolio contributed by the lemongrass. Overall quite a decent choice for dinner.

Salmon Gnocchi (RM 35.00) on the other hand was a catastrophe in both taste and service. The gnochi had a miserable mushy texture, akin to the eggplant with a lot of water. Then the salmon was smelly and has a slight unbearable fishy taste. On top of that, I felt the tomato paste was not a good match to the dish.

Service was awful in the sense that I have to wait at least an hour for the dish to be prepared. After waited for more than 40 minutes, we signalled the waitress to ask our the Salmon Gnocchi whereabouts. Given no explanation, we were only told the Salmon Gnocchi will be served to our table after 15 minutes, which eventually took 25 minutes. By the time I had my Salmon Gnocchi, it turned from a dinner to a supper. Nevertheless, the attitude of the servers are still commendable from the way they handled the hiccups.

Overall, The Junk Cafe might not serves the food with a wow factor but should be enough to satisfy your hunger. It is the ambiance that makes the cafe unique, and best enjoyed with a cup of drinks. Besides, the strategic location nearby to Waterfront also makes it easy accessible by foot.
